GFA Backs UDS Champions Ahead of World Universities Soccer Championship in China

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has thrown its weight behind the University for Development Studies (UDS) as the reigning African Universities Soccer Champions intensify preparations to represent Ghana at the World Universities Soccer Championship in China this September.

In 2024, UDS etched its name in history by clinching the Africa Universities Soccer Championship in Lagos Nigeria, a feat that earned them the honour of flying the nation’s and Africa’s colours at the global stage.

Following the triumph, the University appealed to the GFA for assistance to ensure a befitting representation of Ghana at the world tournament.

Responding to this call, the GFA on Thursday presented sets of training kits to UDS. The items were delivered on behalf of the GFA by the Chief Finance Officer, Mr. Collins K. Dei, and received on behalf of the University by Mr. Michael Ansah, Head of the Liaison and Coordination Department of UDS.

Speaking at the presentation, Mr. Collins Dei noted that the support underscored the GFA’s belief in the immense potential of Ghanaian student-athletes.

“UDS’ continental victory is a testament to the talent and promise that exists within our tertiary institutions. As the Football Association, we are committed to ensuring that this team is adequately prepared to represent Ghana with pride on the global stage,” he said.

Beyond the training kits, the Association pledged to provide UDS with access to the world-class training facilities at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram, giving the team an invaluable opportunity to sharpen their skills before departure.

Receiving the items, Mr. Michael Ansah expressed gratitude on behalf of the University, describing the gesture as a major boost to the team’s morale.

“This support from the GFA is timely and reassuring. It shows that the nation is solidly behind our gallant students as they take Ghana’s game to the world,” he said.

The GFA reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening ties with academic institutions that excel in football, pledging to nurture and showcase talents from Ghana’s universities. With the backing of the FA and the pride of a nation behind them, the UDS team now turns its focus on China, ready to prove that Ghana’s football brilliance extends beyond professional leagues into the classrooms and campuses of the country.
