UDS Delegation Erupts in Joy as Ghanaian University Conquers The World in Dalian

The tension inside the Dalian Sports Centre in China on Saturday night was palpable. The University for Development Studies (UDS) delegation, seated at the VVIP section of the ultra-modern stadium, were supposed to remain composed. But as the final unfolded and history beckoned, composure became impossible.

The high-powered delegation, led by Pro Vice-Chancellor Prof. Elliot Alhassan, Registrar Mr. Nurudeen Issah Abubakar, Director of Finance Dr. Mohammed Hardi Shaibu, Vice Dean of the School of Medicine Prof. Gideon Helegbe, and Secretary of the Sports Advisory Committee Mr. Yussif Abdulai, found themselves living through every kick, every pass, and every mistake of the tense final against football giants Paulista University of Brazil.

The nightmare began early. Barely two minutes into the match, a defensive slip from UDS was punished, and the Brazilian side went ahead. The stadium roared, but in the VVIP section, the Ghanaian delegation sat frozen. “It felt like our hearts had been ripped out,” Mr. Abubakar later confessed. “We knew the team had the quality, but conceding so early against Brazil was frightening.”

For long spells, the Brazilians looked impenetrable, their defensive wall absorbing every Ghanaian surge. But late into the second  half, UDS Midfielder, Asigre rose above his marker to head home the equalizer. That single moment shattered every protocol of decorum expected in the VVIP stands.

“We simply could not hold back,” Prof. Alhassan admitted with a wide grin. “When that ball hit the net, we leapt from our seats and screamed our lungs out. That was not just football; that was Ghana standing tall on the world stage.”

From then on, the delegation, like every Ghanaian fan in the arena, became restless, waving flags, clapping, and urging the players on as if their voices could push the ball across the line.

The real explosion came deep into extra time, in the 120th minute. With penalties looming, Ezideen Alhassan latched onto a loose ball and fired it into the Brazilian net. The stadium shook, but nothing compared to the frenzy in the Ghanaian corner. Professors, administrators, and officials hugged each other wildly, some even tumbling over seats in sheer delight.

“I cannot even describe it,” said Dr. Shaibu, his voice still hoarse after the match. “This is a very happy moment for me,  as a UDS official. We have shown the world that from Tamale to Dalian, dreams do come true.”

The final whistle sealed it: UDS 2, Paulista University 1. Ghana had its first World Universities Football crown. Tears of joy rolled down the cheeks of players and fans alike. “Football brings joy to everyone,” Prof. Helegbe noted. “And tonight, joy was in abundance, not just for UDS, but for the entire nation of Ghana.”

As the players lifted the glittering trophy under the floodlights of Dalian, the UDS delegation stood arm in arm, their earlier anxieties replaced with smiles that stretched across the globe.

“This victory will live forever in the history of UDS,” said Mr. Abdulai. “It proves that football is more than just a game. It is unity, pride, and the unifying spirit of humanity.”
