UDS Football Team Kicks Off Intensive Camp Ahead of China-bound World Universities Football Championship
The University for Development Studies (UDS) football team has officially commenced a high-intensity training camp in earnest, ramping up their preparations for the World Universities Football Championship hosted in Chengdu, China this coming September.
Under the guidance of head coach the Director of Sports, Mr shaibu Ibrahim Tanko and his technical staff, the squad has entered a rigorous camping phase aimed at building peak fitness, tactical cohesion, and mental resilience.

Coaches Kojo Whyte, Bruhan and their other colleagues have instituted daily drills including high-intensity interval sessions, eight-lap shuttle runs, and cross-country endurance circuits. These are crafted to boost players’ stamina, and field, endurance which are critical for the tournament’s demanding schedule of up to six matches in under ten days.
The camp features 5v5 and 7v7 drills on reduced-size pitches. These exercises target positional awareness, tight-space passing accuracy, pressing triggers, and rapid transitional play which are elements expected to be vital against top international university teams.
The coaching team has established circuit-based stations focusing on first-touch control under pressure, mid-range passing and directional shifts, finishing drills from edge-of-box scenarios as well as crossing and combination plays in the final third.
Each day culminates in “match-simulation scrimmages,” where fatigue resistance is tested. Pitch-side coaches maintain a relentless tempo, re-setting play within seconds of a shot, while sports psychologists add auditory distractions to simulate stadium-pressure environments.

Director of Sports, Coach Ibrahim Tanko emphasizes, “We are entering camp with clear goals: to elevate fitness, sharpen tactical discipline, and cultivate a winning team spirit. China will challenge us physically, mentally, and technically, but this intensive preparation ensures we’ll meet that with confidence.”
Coach Tanko adds, “Our conditioning regime is modeled on elite collegiate programs internationally. Beyond stamina, we’re focusing on recovery processes to keep our players fresh and injury-free through back-to-back fixtures.”
The camp officially wraps up in early September at the GFA's Prampram camping facility.
The World Universities Championship kicks off in September, with UDS among the favorites to make a strong showing.
