UDS Shines Again: From World Football Champions to Ghana’s Best in Quality Teaching and No. 2 in International Outlook

Barely weeks after the University for Development Studies (UDS) captured global attention by winning the FISU Football World Cup in Dalian, China, the University has once again made history, this time on the academic front. In the latest Times Higher Education (THE) 2026 World University Rankings, UDS has emerged as one of Ghana’s top-performing universities, demonstrating remarkable strides in teaching quality, research, and internationalisation.

According to the 2026 rankings, UDS is ranked No. 1 in Ghana for Quality Teaching, a feat that underscores the University’s dedication to providing transformative education that empowers students to create real-world impact.

The University also secured the No. 2 position in Ghana for International Outlook, reflecting its growing global partnerships, cross-border collaborations, and increasing appeal to international students and scholars.

Overall, UDS is ranked No. 4 among all universities in Ghana, consolidating its place as one of the nation’s leading institutions of higher learning. This achievement highlights UDS’ steady rise in both academic excellence and global competitiveness, an inspiring story of how a university that began with a development-driven mission has now become a symbol of innovation and international recognition.

Commenting on the development during the welcome ceremony for the FISU World Champions, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Seidu Al-hassan, noted that the ranking reflects the University’s unwavering commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and community engagement. “This recognition from Times Higher Education is not just a win for UDS; it’s a win for the entire Northern Ghana and for all who believe in the power of development-oriented education,” he stated.

The recent global spotlight, first from the University’s football triumph on the world stage, and now from its academic achievements, speaks volumes about the University’s holistic approach to excellence. Whether on the field of play or in the halls of learning, UDS continues to demonstrate that determination, teamwork, and vision yield success.

The University Management has expressed appreciation to the entire UDS community for their collective contribution to this milestone. “We extend hearty congratulations to the Governing Council, Management, Staff, Students, and all members of the UDS community for their dedication, hard work, and loyalty. Together, we have proven that the University for Development Studies is not just making strides, it is shaping the future of higher education in Ghana and beyond.”
