UDS Shines at GUSA Games in Somanya: Bags 22 Medals in Outstanding Performance
The University for Development Studies (UDS) has once again affirmed its dominance in university sports with an outstanding performance at the just-ended Ghana Universities Sports Association (GUSA) Games held in Somanya in the Eastern Region. The event, which brought together athletes from universities across the country, saw UDS emerging as one of the top-performing institutions, amassing an impressive total of 22 medals, comprising 6 gold, 10 silver, and 6 bronze medals.

This year’s competition, which focused primarily on cross-country races, also featured the introduction of several new and exciting disciplines that added colour and diversity to the Games. Among these were “ampe”, a traditional Ghanaian rhythmic clapping and hopping game predominantly played by women; Tug of War, which tested the physical strength and teamwork of participants; and Arm Wrestling, a contest of power and endurance that drew large crowds and enthusiastic cheers.
UDS athletes proved their mettle on the tracks and in the field. The University’s men’s team clinched first place in the Cross-Country event, demonstrating endurance, and exceptional teamwork.

The women’s team also put up a spirited performance to finish third in the Women’s Cross-Country, while the relay team secured a respectable fourth position, underscoring the university’s all-round athletic depth and competitiveness.
Speaking after the Games, the Director of Sports at UDS, Mr. Shaibu Tanko, commended the athletes for their resilience and determination. Mr. Tanko, who recently led UDS to an historic victory at the FISU Football World Cup in China, said the results from Somanya reflected the university’s growing investment in sports development and athlete welfare.
“Our athletes have shown great discipline and passion, and their results speak for themselves. Winning 22 medals across multiple events is no small feat. We are proud of their commitment and the name they continue to bring to UDS,” he said.

Mr. Tanko, who also serves as the President of the Ghana Universities Sports Association (GUSA), expressed his satisfaction with the level of organization by the host institution. He applauded the hosts for introducing new events that not only promoted inclusivity but also showcased Ghana’s cultural sporting heritage.
He, however, urged all member universities to honour their financial obligations to the Association, emphasizing that the timely payment of dues was crucial for sustaining GUSA’s programmes and expanding its sporting calendar.
The GUSA Games continue to serve as an important platform for unearthing and nurturing sporting talent across Ghana’s tertiary institutions, while also fostering unity, discipline, and friendship among student-athletes.

With this latest achievement, UDS once again cements its reputation as a powerhouse in university sports, a university not only committed to academic excellence but also to the holistic development of its students through competitive and recreational sports.
